Armed robbers on Friday attacked a branch of Wema Bank in Iyin-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area of Ekiti State.

It was gathered that the six-man gang arrived the premises of the bank around 3.30pm and blasted the security doors with explosive device suspected to be dynamite.

The robbers carted away millions of naira in an operation that lasted for over 40 minutes.

The robbery attack came barely 24 hours after state police command raised an alarm that some bandits were planning to invade the state and wreak havoc.

An eyewitness confirmed that the robbers had shot sporadically into the air to scare residents and traders at a nearby market before gaining entry into the banking hall.

The residents were said to have ran in different directions due to the severity of the gunshots, which sources said had sent jitters round the spines of those around.

Vehicles traveling along Ado-Iyin-Aramoko-Efon road had to take a detour to prevent being caught in the web of gunshots.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, said the police upon receiving the information immediately visited the troubled spot.

According to him, the command got a distress call from Iyin Ekiti about the robbery and immediately dispatched men and officers to the place.

He added that officers of command of the command are on the trail of the robbers with the determination to effect their arrest.

He assured the people that the hoodlums shall be arrested and brought to justice adding that Ekiti is not a safe haven for robbers.
